2006 Hilltop Challenge Material Now Available

Seventeen schools took part in the sixth annual Hilltop Challenge in Etobicoke on May 18th. This year's problem, which featured a hydraulic mechanism built around an electrically-powered conveyor proved to be a real challenge to the Grade 8 students competing. The team from Hilltop Middle School took first place.

Downloadable photos of all the teams as well as a souvenir brochure from the 2006 Hilltop Tech Skills Challenge are now available. Click here to access them.

Middle and High School Tech Skills Competitions

Across Canada, CFPA members are struggling to find suitably qualified candidates to fill positions within their companies. But to ensure that there will be more students in college and university technology and engineering programs in the future, we have to start influencing middle school and high school students today. The CFPA’s primary activity in this area involves encouraging and supporting technical skills competitions for these students. The longest-running of these competitions is the Toronto-based Hilltop Challengewhich involves up to 20 teams of Grade 8 students. Currently in its sixth year, the Hilltop program includes a factory tour for the teachers. See below for more information.

The Strathcona Challenge is a similar competition in Edmonton that is aimed at secondary students to support the fluid power courses that have been introduced into the high school curriculum as described in the next item.
